Cwm Taf Water Supply Strategy
At Welsh Water, one of our main priorities is to provide customers with a safe, reliable supply of clean drinking water direct to their taps. To achieve this we continually review, and invest in, our drinking water systems.
Our water treatment works in the Bannau Brycheiniog area provide drinking water to people across Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding areas. The investment project in this area is called the Cwm Taf Water Supply Strategy, future proofing our supply of water to our customers.
Our network in this area includes a number of water treatment works, many of which were built in the 1900s.
The three water treatment works at Pontsticill, Cantref and Llwyn-onn in particular are ageing and have become increasingly difficult to maintain. We now have a legal duty to replace these three water treatment works, providing a multi-generational upgrade to supply clean drinking water well into the future.
In 2022, we consulted with the local community and stakeholders on early proposals to build a single new water treatment works near Pontsarn, to replace all three water treatment works.
Following the 2022 consultation, we have spent time considering the local community’s feedback together with our legal duty to improve the local water infrastructure, to see if there are other solutions to the original proposal for a single-site water treatment works.
By taking additional time to review and conduct further surveys, we now have revised proposals that offer an alternative to the single-site.
We now wish to share these revised proposals with you and ask for your feedback.
Welcome to our consultation
This is a non-statutory consultation and is designed to share with you the need for the investment, our proposals, and receive your feedback on these revised proposals ahead of undertaking a statutory consultation.
Our revised proposals involve upgrading one of the existing water treatment works, and constructing a new smaller water treatment works in the Merthyr Tydfil area, creating a split-site solution which allows us to invest in Llywn-onn and replace the water treatment works at Pontsticill and Cantref.
This means we will need to submit two separate planning applications for our proposals to the two relevant planning authorities, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Bannau Brcyheiniog National Park Authority.
For this reason, we're consulting on each proposal separately, separating out the details for clarity.
