One of the main things we do at Welsh Water is aim to provide you with a first-class wastewater service which will take away the wastewater you flush away or wash down the sink whilst also protecting the local environment.

That’s why we’re investing in our wastewater infrastructure in the area.

As a company, we depend on the environment for the water and wastewater services we provide. We take our responsibility to protecting the environment seriously this is why we will be investing £2.5billion on projects to improve the environment between 2025 and 2030.

Pantymwyn wastewater treatment works

Our wastewater treatment works in Pantymwyn cleans and treats wastewater from homes and businesses in Pantymwyn and Cilcain before returning the water to the local watercourse.

Why we will be working in your area?

As the rules and regulations for the standard of how wastewater is treated before it’s returned to the environment gets stricter, we need to ensure the treatment works cleans the water better to help protect the local waterways and sea. As the limits for the site are set tighter, we need to carry out major upgrades to our infrastructure so that the water we return to the local environment is cleaner.

Our current wastewater treatment works at Pantymwyn would not be able to meet new tighter requirements without additional treatment elements, however due to the site’s size and location, we are unable to install more equipment on site.

Therefore, we will be turning the site into a pumping station which will pump all the wastewater away from the site to our nearby Maes-y-Groes wastewater treatment works via a new wastewater pipe. This new pipe 3km pipe will be laid through private land.

We will also be carrying out improvement work at our Maes-y-Groes wastewater treatment works to allow for the extra flows to site. When we lay the new pipe, we will start in Pantymwyn and work our way down to Maes-y-Groes.

This work will be carried out by our partners O’Connor Utilities and their sub-contractors.

As all the work will be on our sites and through fields, we shouldn’t cause too much disruption locally, but you may notice more construction vehicles in the area. If the work will affect you directly, we will be in touch to let you know. This work will not affect your water or wastewater services.

We plan to start the work in the Summer of 2026 and will be completed by the end of 2027.
